Thank you for your booking and we look forward to seeing you soon. Please carefully read the below for all the information you will require for your stay. Please note that by making a reservation or checking into the bunkhouse you are agreeing to be bound by the below and our terms and conditions of business.
There are key code locks on the front entrance and each room. The codes for these will be sent by e-mail once full payment has been received. We suggest you make note of the codes on a phone or jot them down on paper as there is no mobile phone signal in the valley. To use the key code locks press 'c', enter the code and then open the door. If you enter the code incorrectly or the door does not open press 'c' and start again.
Your arrival time must to be between the hours of 16:00 and 23:30. This is to allow time for changing the rooms and to avoid disturbing other guests and local residents. If you are late arriving please ensure you are extremely quiet and be mindful of doors slamming and loud discussion between your group.
Please vacate the bunkhouse by 10:30am on your departure date.
Taxis: There are several local taxi services in Ambleside, Windermere, Grasmere and Keswick.
Ambleside Hilltop Taxis: 07979 664472
Adams Taxis 07553 835820
Train: There is a train to Windermere from Oxenholme. You will need to use either a taxi or catch a bus from there.
Bus: The 516 goes from Ambleside approximately every 2 hours and will stop at the end of the drive if you ask the drive to drop you at the Sticklebarn. If you arrive by train to Windermere then there will be many buses that go from Windermere to Ambleside and most of them will drop you at the bus stop for the 516 on Kelsick road opposite the library.
Take the Great Langdale road from Skelwith Bridge for 4.2 miles until you reach the Sticklebarn & New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Turn right into the lane. At the top turn left behind the Sticklebarn. The bunkhouse is just past New Stickle Cottage on the right.

Due to the bunkhouse location we have limited car parking available – please advise if you are bringing a vehicle when booking. There is free off street parking for 4 (6 if you park really tight) cars in front of the bunkhouse, 2 more in front of New Stickle Cottage and a couple more in the area around the Sticklebarn Tavern. Beyond that we have some local options including the National Trust Car park, which you either need to pay for daily or is free to National Trust members. Note that the Sticklebarn Tavern car park is for their customers and often locked when the pub is closed.
Parking is free for the duration of your stay. This does not include daytime parking before 4:00pm on the day you arrive or after 10:30am on the day that you leave. Parking is at your own risk. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee the availability of a parking space and they will be on a ‘first come, first served basis’. Vehicles above average size will find access difficult. Please enquire before arriving.
There are no garden or outside facilities available. The garden adjacent to the bunkhouse is not for use by bunkhouse guests as it belongs to New Stickle Cottage. There is however plenty of places to sit and enjoy the mountain views a short walk away.
All the beds have a mattress with a fitted sheet as well as a pillow with pillow case, duvet and duvet cover. At the end of your stay we would be grateful if you could remove all linen and then place it in the laundry buckets provided by the front door of the bunkhouse.
Please note there are no cooking or dining/common room facilities in the bunkhouse. The Sticklebarn Tavern and New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel are located right next door and serve good value breakfast (hotel only), lunch and dinners. We would recommend booking breakfast with the hotel if this is your preferred option.
Please note we do not accept stag-do’s or hen-do’s. If you’re after a boozy weekend this is not the place for you. If you do somehow manage to book a stag-do or hen-do without prior consent you will be asked to leave immediately. No refund will be given.
Please note that the bunkhouse is essentially unmanned (although we do live next door). If you are planning to use a baggage transfer company please provide them with the codes needed to access the bunkhouse and your room. Without these they will not be able to drop or collect your bags. You will need to request that they put the bags in the room only if it has been cleaned.
The Lake District is a walker’s paradise and we know that the dog owner’s among you will love to be accompanied by your four-legged friend. We allow guests to bring their dogs with them provided they are never left alone in the room and are not allowed to wander freely around the bunkhouse or surrounding areas. When out walking, dogs should be kept on a lead at all times as the sheep are allowed to freely roam the Langdale Valley. We also ask that you only bring dogs that will not disturb other guests, for example, a dog that will bark every time a door is opened is going to disturb other guests’.
