Situated amidst the finest mountain scenery the lake District has to offer, directly on the fells, Great Langdale Bunkhouse offers world class walking, mountain biking, road cycling, climbing, fell running and wild swimming. Situated in the heart of the Langdale Valley, Great Langdale Bunkhouse offers simple, clean and welcoming accommodation for small groups, families and larger groups of up to 18 people. We are an independent hostel, aimed at providing walkers, climbers and other adventurers a comfortable but affordable place to lay
their head. The bunkhouse has 18 single beds divided into 3 twin rooms and 2 rooms of 6 (all bunk beds). The rooms are simple but comfortable and each room has a double plug socket, a kettle, mugs and a full sized fridge. The bunkhouse has a biomass central heating throughout, so its toasty warm with an endless supply of hot water with powerful showers.
We love well behaved dogs and are very happy to accommodate them as long as they are never left alone in the room or allowed to run freely in the bunkhouse.

Parking
There is sufficient parking for 2 cars (or 4 if you work together). If these spaces are taken there is a National Trust carpark next door. Remember your National Trust membership card!
Dining Facilities
Please note that there are no cooking, dining or common room facilities, but each room has a kettle, mugs and a full size fridge. Lanty Slees Tavern is located right next door and serves good lunch and dinners. The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is located 100m away and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Equally, there is a basic campsite shop for supplies a 2 minute walk away and a larger grocery shop a 2 minute drive (30 min walk).
Bed Linen
We will provide all bed linen for your stay: fitted sheet, pillow with pillow case and duvet with cover. Towels can be reserved at extra cost.
Bathroom Facilities

Is There Parking?There are 2 large spaces outside the bunkhouse or 4 if you work together. These are allocated on a first come, first served basis. If these are not available, there is a National Trust Carpark next door.

Is there anywhere nearby to get supplies?There is a basic campsite shop 2 minutes walk from the bunkhouse. For a larger range, there is a well stocked grocery shop, 2 minutes drive away (30 minute walk).

Is there anywhere close by to enjoy a meal?There is a National Trust owned pub next door “Lanty Slees” which serves delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner between 10am and 9pm. There is no advance booking available, just turn up. There is also the “New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel” about 100m away which serves hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner between 8am and 8pm. Breakfast at 8am needs to be reserved at least by the night before (Tel; 015394372130. The famous climbers pub, “The Old Dungeon Ghyll” is a five minute stroll down a foot path and serves lunch and dinner .

How far is the Cumbrian Way from the bunkhouse?We practically on the Cumbrian Way! Go down our driveway, turn right onto the main road, walk for around 1 minute and it is on your right.

How far is the bunkhouse from Scarfell Pike?It is less usual to climb Scarfell from Langdale (usual route is from Wasdale) but this is an excellent day out in the mountains, although more challenging. This route involves hiking across several other peaks: Bowfell and Esk Pike. This route is for more confident hikers who want to add more variety to their ascent of Scarfell Pike. What is the latest I can check in?We operate a self check in system using key codes, therefore, it is possible to check in at any time. All we ask is that you are mindful of other guests and keep the noise to a minimum.

What is the earliest I can check in?4pm. However, if you need an earlier check in, please ask and we will do our best to accommodate you (although we cannot guarantee this).

When will I receive my codes?4 days before arrival. If your booking is closer to the date of your stay than that, you will receive them immediately.

Can I bring a dog?We love well behaved dogs and are very happy to have them stay. However, please don’t leave them in the room alone or leave them to wander freely around the bunkhouse. We charge £3 extra for dogs.

Can I bring more than 1 dog?Yes as long as they are well behaved. The £3 charge covers any amount of dogs that you bring.

Is there safe bike storage?We do have secure bike storage facilities but these need to be arranged at least 24 hours in advance. Please contact us before or just after your booking.

Can I use public transport to get to the bunkhouse?Yes. Details are: Bus: The 516 goes from Ambleside approximately every 2 hours and will stop at the end of the drive if you ask the driver to drop you off at Lanty Slees (sometimes still called by its old name Stickle Barn). If you arrive by train to Windermere then there will be many buses that go from Windermere to Ambleside and most of them will drop you off at the bus stop for the 516 on Kelsick road, opposite the library. Train: There is a train from Windermere from Oxenholme. You will need to use either a bus or taxi from there. Taxis: There are several local services in Ambkeside, Windermere, Grasmere and Keswick.
